Gran’s Chocolate Cake Recipe


–       2 ½ cups flour

–       6 tbsp. cocoa

–       ½ tsp. salt

–       ¾ cup butter (yes, butter)

–       2 ½ firmly packed brown sugar

–       3 eggs

–       ½ cup milk mixed with a ½ tsp vinegar to sour

–       2 tsp. vanilla extract

–       ½ tsp. almond extract

–       1 cup hot water


1)   Grease and flour two 8” round cake pans and preheat oven to 375 F

2)   Sift flour, cocoa, soda and salt together into a bowl.

3)   In a separate bowl, cream butter. Add sugar gradually, beating until fluffy.

4)   Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each.

5)   Blend in small amounts of flour mixture alternately with milk, ending with flour.

6)   Add vanilla and almond extracts and water and blend.

7)   Pour into the two prepared pans and bake 25-30 minutes. Toothpick will come out clean when properly cooked.

8)   Remove from pans to cool.

9)   May be iced or split and layered with whipping cream and cherry pie filling to create a black forest cake.
